Popular Dog Breeds We Love Caring For

At Colorado Critter Sitter, one of our favorite parts of what we do is getting to know dogs of all shapes, sizes, breeds, and personalities. From energetic pups who are ready to hit the sidewalk the second we arrive to couch potatoes who would rather enjoy some extra belly rubs, every dog is a little different!

While certain breeds consistently rank among the most popular dogs in the United States, we know that breed is only part of what makes a dog who they are. Here are some popular breeds you may recognize—and a little about what makes each one special.

1. French Bulldog

Frenchies have become incredibly popular thanks to their compact size, affectionate personalities, and unmistakable ears. They often love being close to their people and can be quite the little comedians.

Because of their short snouts, French Bulldogs can be especially sensitive to heat. Here in Colorado, that means being extra careful with outdoor activity on warm, sunny days.

2. Labrador Retriever

Labs are friendly, outgoing, and usually ready for an adventure. Whether it's a walk around the neighborhood, a game of fetch, or investigating every interesting smell along the way, Labs tend to enjoy staying active.

Their friendly personalities make them wonderful companions, but their energy levels also mean regular exercise and enrichment can be especially important.

3. Golden Retriever

There's a reason Goldens are so well loved! They're typically affectionate, intelligent, social, and eager to spend time with their families.

Many Goldens enjoy walks, playtime, enrichment activities, and plenty of attention—which makes them pretty fun critters for us to care for!

4. German Shepherd

German Shepherds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and athleticism. They often thrive when they have opportunities for both physical exercise and mental stimulation.

For these smart pups, a walk isn't always just about getting their steps in. Having time to sniff, explore, and experience their environment can provide valuable mental enrichment, too.

5. Poodle

Standard, Miniature, or Toy—Poodles are known for being incredibly intelligent and trainable. They're also active dogs who often enjoy having something to do.

And don't let the fancy haircuts fool you! Many Poodles are playful, energetic pups who are more than ready for an adventure.

6. Dachshund

Small body, BIG personality!

Dachshunds are curious, affectionate, and often surprisingly determined. Those short legs don't necessarily stop them from wanting to explore every smell they encounter on a walk.

Because of their long backs, however, it's important to be mindful of activities involving excessive jumping or stairs.

7. Beagle

If you've ever walked a Beagle, you probably already know—the nose is in charge!

Beagles have an incredible sense of smell and love exploring their surroundings. Giving them opportunities to safely sniff during walks can provide wonderful mental stimulation.

8. Rottweiler

Rottweilers are strong, intelligent dogs that can also be incredibly affectionate and devoted companions. With proper training, socialization, exercise, and care, they can make wonderful family dogs.

Like any breed, getting to know the individual dog's personality is incredibly important.

9. German Shorthaired Pointer

If there's one word that often describes a German Shorthaired Pointer, it's energy!

These athletic dogs were bred to work and often need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Regular walks, play sessions, and enrichment activities can help keep both their bodies and brains busy.

10. Bulldog

Bulldogs are recognizable by their adorable wrinkles, sturdy builds, and often laid-back personalities. Many are perfectly happy trading a marathon hike for a shorter stroll followed by some quality relaxation time.

Like French Bulldogs, their short snouts can make them more vulnerable to overheating, so extra precautions are important during Colorado's warmer months.
